Are you feeling overwhelmed by the thought of downsizing your home while also having to consider the well-being of your beloved pets? The stress and anxiety of finding a new, pet-friendly space can be daunting and exhausting. You may be worried about how your furry companions will adjust to a smaller living environment or if they will feel comfortable in a new location.
For those in their later years, pet ownership can present challenges. There are financial, physical, and housing limitations as a result. Indeed, pets cost money, require physical efforts, and restrict where you can live.
However, the benefits associated with pet ownership outweighs the challenges. Pets provide valuable social contact, in fact, many feel that their pet is their very best friend. According to a study by Hart (1995), 38% of dog owners place the relationship with their dogs above that of their other family members.

Tips for downsizing in an apartment with a dog:
- Consider the Apartment & Complex: First floor apartments are generally easier for apartment dogs as you’ll be taking frequent toilet trips outside with puppies. If this isn’t possible, look to secure an apartment with a balcony. Ensure the balcony is safe and there are no fall hazards.
- Pet-Friendly Amenities: Look for communities or neighborhoods that offer pet-friendly amenities. This could include nearby parks, trails, and perhaps a community center with pet-oriented activities.
- Potty Train Your Pup to Use the Patio or Balcony: Taking your dog for a couple of walks a day is a great way to get exercise and bond. However, you don’t necessarily want to have to snap on the leash every time your pup needs to use the bathroom. If your apartment has a balcony or patio area, you could try training your dog to use an outdoor potty pad area. If anything, this could be a solution to avoid late-night bathroom excursions.
- Create a Sanctuary for Your Dog: Set up a decent area dedicated for your dog. This will be an area your dog can retreat to when relaxing is necessary. Make this area as comfortable as possible for your apartment dog! We recommend laying out a mat to protect your floor from bone chewing and eating.
